Self-Hosted Automation

Self-hosted automation means running the automation engine on your own infrastructure instead of a vendor's cloud — you deploy n8n, Windmill, or Activepieces on a server you control rather than paying per task on a hosted plan. It matters for three reasons founders care about: cost (a flat server bill instead of per-operation metering that punishes high volume), data control (sensitive records never leave your environment, which helps with compliance), and no execution caps. The trade-off is you now own the ops: updates, uptime, scaling, backups, and securing the instance are yours. For an indie hacker running millions of operations, self-hosting an open-source engine can cut a four-figure monthly bill to the cost of a small VPS. Practically, start hosted to validate the workflow, then migrate to self-hosted once volume makes the metered pricing hurt — and budget real time for maintenance, because "free" software still costs operational effort.
