Glossary ↗Land and Expand
Land and expand is a go-to-market motion where you win a small initial footprint — one team, a single use case, a low-friction plan — then grow revenue inside the same account over time through more seats, higher tiers, and adjacent use cases. It's the engine behind net revenue retention above 100%: the initial "land" may be barely profitable, but expansion compounds cheaply because you're selling to a customer who already trusts you, with no new acquisition cost. Slack, Datadog, and Notion all rode this motion from bottoms-up adoption to enterprise contracts. For builders, designing for expansion means removing friction from the first purchase (self-serve, free tier, single-team onboarding) while building natural expansion paths (usage that grows, features that pull in more of the org, admin controls that appeal to buyers). The metric to watch is net revenue retention; the risk is landing in accounts that never expand, which quietly wrecks your unit economics.
