Cloud Development Environment (CDE)

A cloud development environment (CDE) is a fully configured, ready-to-code workspace that runs on a remote server instead of a developer's laptop — accessed through a browser or a thin local editor. Tools like GitHub Codespaces, Gitpod, and Coder spin up a container with the right runtime, dependencies, and environment variables from a config file in your repo, so a new contributor goes from clone to running code in minutes instead of a day of setup. Because the environment is defined as code, everyone gets an identical, reproducible setup — no more "works on my machine." For SaaS builders this cuts onboarding time, lets you review or reproduce a branch on demand, and moves heavy builds off underpowered laptops onto scalable compute. Practical note: CDEs shine for teams, contractors, and open-source contributors where consistent setup is painful; weigh the per-seat cost and network dependence against the setup time they save. Commit the environment definition to the repo so it stays versioned with your code.
