The number looks administrative, but it is a financing decision: whoever waits is lending to the other party, interest-free, for the length of the term. In a subscription business that difference compounds across every customer and every renewal.\n\nFor the seller, longer terms mean revenue is recognised and staff are paid before the cash arrives, and the gap has to be funded from somewhere. That is why smaller vendors push for shorter terms, why annual prepayment is usually offered at a discount, and why a large buyer's standard net 60 can be a genuine obstacle rather than a formality. For the buyer, longer terms improve working capital at no cost, which is precisely why procurement departments treat them as a target.\n\nPayment terms interact with billing frequency, and the two are often confused. Frequency is how often you are invoiced — monthly, quarterly, annually in advance. Terms are how long you have to pay each invoice. Annual in advance on net 30 and monthly in arrears on net 30 produce very different cash profiles from the same headline price, and the discount attached to prepayment is the vendor paying you for the cash.\n\nSeveral clauses travel with the terms and deserve reading. Late-payment interest, which is often stated and rarely charged until a relationship sours. Suspension rights, which say how long an unpaid invoice can stand before service is cut off — a serious operational risk if the tool is in a critical path and your accounts payable process is slow. Disputed-invoice handling, which should let you withhold the contested line rather than the entire invoice. And whether taxes and currency conversion sit on top.\n\nUsage-based pricing complicates all of this, because the invoice amount is not known until the period ends. A buyer on consumption pricing should understand when usage is measured, when it is billed, and how a true-up for overage is presented — arriving as a single large invoice with short terms is a common and avoidable surprise. Spend caps and budget alerts are the mitigations, and they belong in the same conversation as the payment terms.\n\nThe practical advice is to negotiate terms and price together rather than in sequence. A vendor who cannot move on price often can move on terms, and for a buyer with seasonal cash flow that can be worth more than the discount. Just be honest internally about which one you actually need, because asking for both and getting neither is the usual outcome of treating a payment term as a bargaining chip rather than a requirement.","Net payment terms set how long after an invoice payment is due.
