It matters because accelerators are among the most expensive resources in a stack and are usually rented by time rather than by work done: a card that is idle costs the same as a card that is saturated, so unused capacity converts directly into wasted money.\n\nThe number most tools display is easy to misread. A common utilization metric reports the fraction of time during which at least one kernel was running, not the fraction of the device's compute that was busy. A workload that keeps the card nominally occupied while using a small share of its arithmetic throughput can therefore report a high figure and still be leaving most of the hardware idle. Memory occupancy is a separate axis again: a model can fill the memory without keeping the compute units busy, which limits what else can share the card.\n\nFor inference specifically, the usual bottleneck is not raw compute. Generating text one token at a time is dominated by moving model weights and cached attention state through memory, which leaves arithmetic units waiting. This is why batching helps so much — serving several requests together amortises those memory movements — and why techniques such as continuous batching, which admits new requests into a running batch instead of waiting for the current one to finish, are central to serving efficiently.\n\nThe practical levers follow from that. Batch where latency budgets allow. Use a smaller or quantized model when quality permits, since a model that fits differently in memory changes what the hardware can do. Separate workloads with different shapes rather than mixing long-context requests with short ones on the same queue. Scale to zero for anything bursty, and consider whether a workload genuinely needs a dedicated card at all rather than a shared endpoint.\n\nUtilization also has a floor set by demand, and that floor is the real question for self-hosting. Running your own accelerators is cheaper per unit of work than a hosted API only above a certain sustained volume, because idle time is paid for. Traffic that is spiky, seasonal or still growing often costs less on a metered endpoint, and the crossover point moves whenever provider pricing or model efficiency changes.\n\nFinally, treat utilization as a diagnostic rather than a target. Driving the number up by making requests wait longer, or by keeping a card busy with speculative work, can raise the metric while making the product worse. The metric worth optimising is cost per unit of useful output, with utilization as one of the explanations for where it goes.","GPU utilization is how much of an expensive accelerator is actually doing work.
