It is the accounting counterpart to showback, which reports the same figures without moving any money, and the difference between them is entirely about incentive.\n\nThe mechanism is straightforward: costs are attributed using tags, accounts or usage metering, then journalled to cost centres on a defined schedule. Everything difficult about chargeback is in the allocation rules rather than the mechanics — specifically in what to do with the costs that no single team causes. Shared platforms, networking, security tooling, observability and the base cost of keeping an environment alive all have to land somewhere, and every method of splitting them is defensible and arguable in roughly equal measure.\n\nDone well, chargeback changes behaviour because a budget is a constraint that a report is not. Teams start asking whether they need three environments, whether their retention window is justified, whether a workload can run on cheaper capacity, and whether a feature that costs more than it earns should exist. Done badly, it changes different behaviour: teams optimise for the allocation formula, argue about the split instead of the spend, hoard capacity to protect against future allocations, or avoid using a shared platform precisely because its costs are visible while a private workaround is not.\n\nTwo design rules keep it healthy. First, allocation must be explicable in a sentence — a team that cannot understand why it was charged will dispute rather than act. Second, the team charged must be able to influence the cost; charging a group for infrastructure it cannot resize, reschedule or turn off produces resentment and no savings.\n\nAI workloads are where chargeback earns its keep and also where the data usually is not ready. Model spend does not divide neatly by team: one shared assistant may serve every department, an agent may call tools owned elsewhere, and cost per request varies with prompt size, retrieval volume and model choice rather than with request count. Making chargeback meaningful means instrumenting the application to record spend against a feature, a tenant and a workflow at the moment of the call, because that information does not exist on the invoice.\n\nStart with showback, publish the allocation rules before the first charge lands, and phase the transition. A chargeback introduced without warning arrives as a surprise deduction from a budget already committed elsewhere, which is a reliable way to make an accounting change into a political one.","Chargeback moves infrastructure and software cost onto the budget of the team that caused it, turning a shared bill into a set of individual constraints.",null,[11,14,17,20,23],{"slug":12,"name":13},"budget-alert","Budget Alert",{"slug":15,"name":16},"cost-allocation-tag","Cost Allocation Tag",{"slug":18,"name":19},"finops","FinOps (Cloud Financial Operations)",{"slug":21,"name":22},"showback","Showback",{"slug":24,"name":25},"unit-economics","Unit Economics",[27,31,35,38,41,44,46,49,52,53,56,59],{"slug":28,"category":5,"name":29,"updated_at":30},"air-gapped-deployment","Air-Gapped Deployment","2026-09-09T03:30:02+00:00",{"slug":32,"category":5,"name":33,"updated_at":34},"autoscaling","Autoscaling","2026-09-08T21:32:36+00:00",{"slug":36,"category":5,"name":37,"updated_at":34},"availability-zone","Availability Zone (AZ)",{"slug":39,"category":5,"name":40,"updated_at":34},"block-storage","Block Storage",{"slug":42,"category":5,"name":43,"updated_at":30},"bring-your-own-cloud","Bring Your Own Cloud (BYOC)",{"slug":12,"category":5,"name":13,"updated_at":45},"2026-09-08T21:32:37+00:00",{"slug":47,"category":5,"name":48,"updated_at":30},"change-freeze","Change Freeze",{"slug":50,"category":5,"name":51,"updated_at":30},"control-plane","Control Plane and Data Plane",{"slug":15,"category":5,"name":16,"updated_at":45},{"slug":54,"category":5,"name":55,"updated_at":45},"cost-observability","Cost Observability",{"slug":57,"category":5,"name":58,"updated_at":34},"disaster-recovery","Disaster Recovery",{"slug":60,"category":5,"name":61,"updated_at":34},"edge-ai","Edge AI"]
