Providers aggregate spend along these tags, which means the quality of every cost report you will ever produce is decided at the moment resources are created, not at the moment the report is run.\n\nThe characteristic failure is silence. A resource created without tags does not error; it simply appears in the invoice as unattributed spend, and the proportion of a bill that lands in that bucket is the single best indicator of how much a cost programme can actually achieve. Tags applied retrospectively rarely fix history either, because most providers do not re-tag past usage, so a month of untagged spend is a month that can never be explained.\n\nThat is why enforcement belongs in the creation path. Requiring tags in infrastructure-as-code modules, rejecting untagged resources in policy, and inheriting tags from an account or project structure all work; asking people to remember does not. A small mandatory set — owner, environment, service, cost centre — enforced without exception is far more useful than a large optional taxonomy that is half-applied.\n\nConsistency matters as much as coverage. Tag keys are usually case-sensitive and free-text, so a single concept spelled four ways produces four groups in every report, and the reconciliation work falls on whoever is trying to explain the bill. Agree the vocabulary, write it down, and validate values against it rather than allowing free entry.\n\nFor AI spend, provider tags stop at the account boundary and the interesting attribution is inside your application. A single API key may serve a dozen features, and the invoice will show tokens rather than purposes. The equivalent discipline is to record, with every model call, the feature, the tenant, the workflow and the model version alongside the token counts, so that spend can be grouped the same way infrastructure is. Without it, AI becomes the one line in the cost report that nobody can break down.\n\nThe payoff is that unit economics become computable. Once tags reliably connect spend to a product and a customer, questions like which feature costs more than it earns, which tenant is unprofitable, and which environment could be switched off overnight stop being guesses and become queries.","A cost allocation tag labels a resource so its spend can be attributed later.
