The aim is to let a viewer or a downstream system check that history rather than judge authenticity by appearance, which no longer works for synthetic images, audio or video.\n\nThe technical approach is signed metadata travelling with the file. A cryptographically signed manifest records the origin and each subsequent edit, so a verifier can confirm the chain has not been altered and can see which claims are backed by a signature. This is different from watermarking, which hides a signal inside the content itself; the two are complementary, because a signed manifest is durable but strippable, while an embedded watermark survives some transformations but carries far less information.\n\nThe limitation is structural and worth being clear about. Provenance data proves what a claim says and who signed it, not that a depicted event happened. Absence of provenance proves nothing either — a screenshot, a re-encode or a platform that strips metadata all leave a genuine file bare. So provenance is a way to raise confidence in content that carries it, not a detector for content that does not, and any product treating a missing manifest as evidence of fakery will be wrong constantly.\n\nFor SaaS teams the practical questions are narrower than the public debate. If a product generates media, does it attach provenance information, and can a customer turn that on or off? If it accepts media, is provenance preserved through processing and storage, or quietly discarded on the first resize? If it publishes on a customer's behalf, whose signing identity appears? Each of those is a product decision that becomes expensive to reverse once files are in circulation.\n\nExpect this to be a moving area. Support is uneven across tools and platforms, and a pipeline that preserves provenance end to end today can lose it when one component in the middle is upgraded — which is a good reason to test the chain rather than assume it, and to keep your own record of what your systems generated regardless of what survives in the file.","Content provenance records where media came from and what edited it.
